On these pages you will see how to use a woodworking inlay to customize a plaque that will be used as a bowling trophy. Now, I will bet most of the woodworking readers are not going to make bowling trophies, but the techniques used can be applied to just about any project.

The first step is to plan and design the  inlay and make a template to produce it.  A special, affordable tool,  the router inlay kit, does the work of producing a template for the entire project.

The second step is using the router tool to actually cut cavities and inserts that match perfectly.

The third step is installing and finishing the pieces.

All of the steps are completely illustrated.
woodworking inlay idea, plaque project

The graphic of the ball striking the two pins was inserted into the oak plaque using the woodworking techniques discussed in the following pages.  You can use the same technique to jazz up a table, a tray, furniture, or just about any flat wooden product.  The great part is that once you make a template, you can use it over and over on any project.

In addition to the inlay a router is also used to carve out a place for a team picture, and a brass engraving was purchased from the local trophy shop and added to the bottom.

We will devote a whole page to making picture frames using the same technique used for this project.  It is a good way to use up some of your scrap boards, and doesn't involve any mitering.
